What do we believe the Quiddity Press publishing program should be? Why another small press?
We are committed to publishing simply because quality writers need a way to publish books that, for one reason or another, are not brought to public attention through the usual channels of commercial publishing.
Good writers have to publish, and we have to help them do that, for the education and growth of the reading audience. Therefore, we need to operate as a commercially viable press. But . . . we want to publish the best books we can find -- work which may not be considered commercially sound by major houses. To do this may call for creative arrangements between our press and the author.
What are our author/publisher arrangements? Are we a true "royalty" publisher?
Yes! But with a small twist . . . As we "start up," we are tailoring our contracts in such a way that the objectives of both QUID and the author are well-served and create no undue financial hardship for either party -- and allow optimum opportunity for reasonable gain for both. This may or may not (depending on our current finances, and the author's wishes) involve an initial investment by the author -- which is returned as quickly as possible by initial payment of high royalties, or by applying other income to this "debt."
We have found this open-handed attitude creates healthy, supportive, and purposeful relationships. It is the only way we can survive at present and continue our effort in today's marketplace. It relies fully on Godly principles -- and mutual trust and well-being.
How are Quiddity Press books to be consistent with our publishing vision and company mission?
All our books must express a commitment to God's truth, implicitly or explicitly. We will publish books that are well-written, credible, well researched, and carefully conceived as to editing, design, and production values. While they may not be overtly "religious," they must nonetheless be consistent with what we hold to be Truth.
We have a moral imperative to produce reading matter of high quality for our readers. To fit our editorial model, our books must be clearly written to a clearly identifiable reading audience. They must be distinguished in one way or another from other books in the same field. The books need to be written by qualified authors and they must have reasonable sales expectations.
We intend to publish only a few books each year, most of which will come to us by word of mouth or our recognition of someone's work as an imperative for QUID. We are not openly soliciting manuscripts at present.
What questions do we ask at QUID before we agree to publish a book?
What is the book's subject matter and approach? Is the subject matter consonant with our publishing program? Does the approach fit within our editorial model? Are acceptable writing samples attached? (We maintain expectations regarding writing samples.) For what readership is the book intended? What distinguishes the book from others on the subject? If the book is absolutely unique, why is there no other book available on the subject? Is it possible that there is no need for (or interest in) such a book? What are the author's qualifications for writing the book? Why is this manuscript appropriate for QUIDDITY PRESS? What market is addressed by the book? Are the author's expectations for publishing the book realistic? Does this book potentially add something of value to the great swath of literature available on the market?
What is our vision as a small press? What is, perchance, our potential? Are we aiming for the stars?
We are aiming for the Kingdom of God to be in some way revealed and the sovereignty of God to be in some sense affirmed -- both in the words we publish and in the way we do business. We believe that if we keep that "seek ye first" vision before us, all else shall indeed "be added unto us," both for our press and the authors who covenant with us, and ultimately, for the readers we jointly serve. Amen and amen.
